I MELTED THE SILENCE

There is a line written on a cup I came across recently that stayed with me.

“I melted at the silence.”

It took me back to my college days about five years ago.

We had a system of examinations that was heavily based on memorisation. Most of us followed it without questioning it because that is how it had always been. One day in class, our tutor explained the same pattern again, and something about it did not sit right with me. It felt like we were being trained to remember, not to understand.

I remember sitting there, thinking about it for a long time. I could have ignored it like everyone else. It would have been easier to stay quiet.

But that day, I decided not to.

I wrote an email to my tutor. I shared my thoughts honestly. I wrote that learning should be about understanding something new, not just memorising it to pass an exam. I did not know how it would be received, and I was not sure if it would make any difference.

But it did.

That moment was not just about a reply or a change. It was about realising that silence does not always protect you, sometimes it holds you back.

Since then, I have carried that with me. Whether it is at work, in conversations, or in life decisions, I try to speak when something feels important. Not impulsively, but intentionally.

Looking back, that one email taught me something far bigger than any exam could.

Growth often begins the moment you stop staying silent.
